What is music therapy?

Music Therapy is an established health profession in which music is used within a therapeutic relationship to address physical, emotional, cognitive, and social needs of individuals. After assessing the strengths and needs of each client, the qualified music therapist provides the indicated treatment including creating, singing, moving to, and/or listening to music.

Does private insurance or Medicaid cover music therapy treatment?

In South Carolina, no Medicaid program currently covers music therapy treatment of any kind. Very few private insurances cover music therapy treatment, and the process for attempting to be reimbursed is very labor-intensive and complex. As a result, Noteworthy Music Therapy does not bill their services to any form of insurance.

What type of clients do you treat?

At Noteworthy, our primary focus is on the treatment of children (birth to young adulthood) with a variety of conditions and diagnoses, including but not limited to: autism spectrum disorder, Down Syndrome, cerebral palsy, Rett Syndrome, seizure disorders, Williams Syndrome, and other genetic conditions as well as physical disabilities.

Where do the music therapy sessions take place?

Noteworthy is a traveling practice, primarily seeing our clients in their own homes (the natural environment setting). We also have agreements with several Charleston-based pediatric clinics, enabling us to see clients in those locations when the family and therapy team decide it is most appropriate. Ask your therapist if you believe your child would be more successful in a clinic setting rather than at home. In cases where the child is a good candidate for success in a “telehealth” environment, and/or if the distance from our location is a factor, we are happy to arrange for virtual sessions via Zoom or a similar platform.

How do I know if music therapy would be beneficial for my child?

Without exception, every family who inquires about our services says “He/she just loves music!” If you’ve observed that music has a positive effect on your child’s mood, energy level, or temperament, you’re already seeing how beneficial music can be! If you use music as a calming device when they’re upset, scared, or overstimulated, you are already using music as a tool to help your child. A certified music therapist does that and more, designing an individualized treatment plan which will use musical tools to help and support your child in a multitude of ways!
